AGREE SCOPE
Whatever the size of your project, ensure that you have agreed its scope with the owner before you start planning.
Changes to scope and requirements can seriously impact plans, costs and delivery once the project is underway.
No matter how large or small the project a project plan and correct management of the various phases.
This also applies to software package purchases.
All projects have various phases that need to be organised and controlled, this not only controls cost and and schedule but ensures that training is in place thus maintaining morale.
While ALL projects need requirements and planning different techniques are used dependent on the size of the project.
Smaller projects are often best run using simple Timetables and Action Plans that have control points and deliverables to monitor project progress and take any appropriate remedial action should it be required. These should be prepared and negotiated with management and project staff to improve plans and get buy-in. This technique is appropriate for small projects, where deadlines may not be so important and where you don't need to co-ordinate other people.
For larger projects more developed project management skills are required. This is particularly the case where multiple people and organisations are involved and where tight deadlines are involved.
